Growing up, I was a science fiction freak, reading everything the school library held, then traveling on Saturday mornings to the Miami Public Library to feed my addiction. When Frances Pauli sent me a copy of her book, The Dimensional Shift, I immediately went into an approach-avoidance conflict. This is the Romance Radio Network after all. Once into her book, I realized this is a romance, clothed in SciFi. A twofer, I said. I get to feed both my addictions, Science Fiction and Romance.
Frances Pauli is an exceptional writer as she is able to grab the nuance of a story and present it deliciously. The protagonist here is not some phenomenal over-achiever, but a plucky suburban hotel maid escaping from her unhappy past. There, with other quirky characters, she meets her love interest and, in no time, she’s taken a job in a different dimension. The characters here are extraordinary, from a ball of gelatin to an invisible alien with an attitude. She weaves these characters in and out, demonstrating social acceptance along with an adventure. I rate The Dimensional Shift a must read and proclaim it’s out of this world!
